Planning a Home Sauna: Electrical (240V), Ventilation, and Where to Put It
The sauna itself is the easy part — you pick one, a truck brings it. What separates happy owners from the ones selling a barely-used cabin on Craigslist is everything around it: the circuit that wasn't budgeted, the ventilation that wasn't installed, the heater sized to the brochure instead of the room. Plan these three things before you order and the rest is assembly.
Electrical comes first, because it decides everything else
Every real sauna heater — anything from about 4.5kW up — requires a dedicated 240V circuit, typically 30 to 60 amps depending on the heater, run from your panel to the sauna location and hardwired by an electrician. This is not optional and not a place for creativity: heaters are among the largest single loads in a house, and an undersized or shared circuit is how breakers nuisance-trip at best and how insurance conversations start at worst.
Budget $250-$900 for a straightforward run to a basement or garage location near the panel, and more — sometimes much more — for a trenched run to a backyard barrel or for houses whose panels are already full. If your panel has no spare capacity, a subpanel or service upgrade can add four figures. This is the single most common surprise cost in sauna ownership, and it's why we list electrical requirements on every unit page.
The 120V exception is real but narrow: most infrared cabins, sauna blankets, and small steam tents run on a standard outlet. If the electrician line item kills your budget, that's the honest argument for those categories — not the wellness claims.
Size the heater to the room, not the brochure
The working rule for traditional heaters is roughly 1kW per 45 cubic feet of room volume. A 6x6x7-foot room is about 250 cubic feet — a 6kW heater's natural territory. Then adjust upward for anything that bleeds heat: uninsulated walls add volume-equivalent, and glass is the big one — every square meter of glass door or window effectively adds more than a cubic meter to the volume the heater must serve. A glass-fronted cabin with a heater sized to its nominal volume will spend its life struggling to reach temperature.
Undersized heaters are the root cause of the most common complaint in owner reviews: 'it only gets to 150°F'. Sometimes that's a small heater working correctly in an oversized or leaky room; sometimes it's a panel-built cabin losing heat as fast as it's made. When in doubt, buy the next heater size up — a bigger heater loafing along at moderate settings runs quieter thermostatically and lasts longer than a small one running flat-out forever.
Ventilation: the spec everyone skips and every unhappy owner is missing
A sauna is not a sealed box — it needs air exchange both for comfort (fresh air for breathing, even heat distribution) and for the building around it (moving humid air out instead of into your framing). The classic arrangement is an intake vent low on the wall near the heater and an exhaust vent on the opposite wall — low under the bench for gentle circulation in a mechanically ventilated room, or high for gravity ventilation. Your manufacturer's manual has a specific diagram; the important thing is that you follow it rather than skipping the vents to 'keep the heat in'.
For indoor installs, think about the room around the sauna too. A basement sauna dumps its post-session heat and moisture into the basement; a bathroom install feeds an existing exhaust fan. Concrete and tile shrug this off, carpet and drywall don't love it, and a cheap humidity monitor in the surrounding room the first month will tell you if you need to add mechanical exhaust. Steam showers are the extreme case — a true vapor-sealed enclosure with a sloped ceiling is mandatory, which is why we call steam generators a renovation, not an appliance.
Where to put it: the honest ranking
Basements are the best indoor location for most people: concrete floor, short electrical runs, temperature-stable, and nobody minds the footprint. Garages are nearly as good if you'll tolerate the winter walk from the house. Spare bathrooms work well for small cabins and are the natural home of steam. Living spaces are where glass-front designer cabins earn their premium — just mind the floor rating and the ventilation.
Outdoors buys you the full backyard-sauna romance and the cold-plunge contrast, at the cost of a foundation (level gravel or pavers at minimum), weather exposure, a longer electrical run or a wood-fired stove with a chimney kit, and slower winter heat-ups. Floors, clearances, and the details that prevent regret
Under the sauna: concrete, tile, or a purpose-made floor kit — never bare carpet, which traps moisture and smells like a locker room within a season. Around the heater: the manual's clearance-to-combustibles numbers are non-negotiable, and they're the reason small rooms sometimes can't take the big heater the volume math suggests. Above: check ceiling height; most cabins want 7 feet and shrinking that compresses the temperature gradient that makes the top bench the hot seat.
Delivery is the last detail: cabins arrive as heavy panel freight, and 'curbside delivery' means exactly that. Measure your door and stair widths against the largest panel, line up a second pair of hands, and inspect glass panels before signing — freight-cracked glass is the most common delivery claim in this category.
The build order that avoids re-doing work
Sequence matters: pick the location, verify panel capacity and get an electrical quote, then choose the sauna, then schedule the electrician for after assembly (heaters are hardwired last). Buyers who fall in love with a specific cabin first routinely end up paying rush rates to solve a wiring problem they could have priced in an afternoon. The boring version — quote first, order second — is cheaper every time.
